Modalities of the Medicare General Enrollment Period

If a person was not automatically enrolled in Medicare or missed their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), they may apply for Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and/or Part B) during the Medicare General Enrollment Period. The General Enrollment Period runs from January 1 to March 31 with coverage starting on July 1.

Important Information Regarding the General Enrollment Period:

  • During this period, you can enroll in Part A, Part B, or both.

  • Coverage commences from July 1 within the year to applied.

  • You might be required to pay a late enrollment fee if you delay enrollment.

  • Between April 1 and June 30 of the same year, you can be qualified to sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) or a Medicare Prescription Drug plan (Part D).

Would there be any penalties If I enroll in Medicare after the GEP has ended?

If you sign up after the deadline, you’ll probably incur a fee. Missing your Initial Enrollment Period can be expensive because Medicare Parts A, B, and D may impose premium penalties.

Penalty for Medicare Part A Premium:

If you or your spouse have worked and paid taxes for at least ten years, Part A is premium-free. If you were required to enroll in Part A but didn’t do so when you initially became eligible, the late enrollment fee is 10%.

The Part A premium penalty is compounded at twice the number of years you delayed your enrollment. If you wait two years, for instance, you’d pay 10% for four years (2 x 2). Regardless of how long you put off Part A enrollment, the penalty still stands.

Premium Penalty for Medicare Part D:

For every month you put off signing up for a Part D plan, you will be penalized 1% of the typical Part D cost. For as long as you’re enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, the sum is added to your monthly Part D premium.

If you are eligible for Extra Help or have acceptable medication coverage, you are not penalized for delaying your enrollment in Medicare Part D. The fine may be imposed if it has been more than 63 days since you last had creditable coverage.

Penalty for Medicare Part B Premium:

You will typically be penalized for not enrolling in Part B when you initially become eligible by paying a late enrollment fee. An additional 10% is charged for each successive 12-month delay in Part B enrollment. For as long as you have Part B, you must pay this fine.

For instance, if your Initial Enrollment Period ended September 30, 2019, and you signed up for Part B during the General Enrollment Period in March 2022, by then you would have delayed 30 months to enroll, which includes two full 12-month periods, your late enrollment penalty would be 20% of the Part B premium (2 x 10%).

If you meet specific criteria, you can often avoid a late enrollment penalty.

If I'm employed and qualified for Medicare, am I exempt from penalties?

It’s probable! Due to having access to health insurance through their employment insurance, many people continue to work after turning 65 and become eligible for Medicare. If this applies to you, follow these recommendations to prevent Medicare late enrollment fines.

When you turn 65, take part in your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. As long as you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, Part A is premium-free throughout this time, so you might want to think about signing up for it.

Enroll yourself in Medicare as soon as possible. If you don’t currently get payments from the Railroad Retirement Board or Social Security, Medicare won’t let you know about your IEP.

If you’re eligible for a Medicare Special Enrollment Period (SEP), you can put off signing up for Part B and Part D without paying late enrollment fees. You must first get your employer’s assurance that you have creditable coverage.
